Going through the scriptures and in today’s life you will discover several stories of great kings, lessons about their rise and fall. A closer look will reveal a pattern , a pattern for kings who were destroyed and kings whose thrones endured. Reading through these events, I discovered 5 Spirits that destroy kings and their sequence of operation. The spirits in the order they operate are:
- Spirit of Arrogance
- Reprobate Spirit
- Spirit of Delusion and Error
- Deceiving Spirit on the Lips of his prophets
- Spirit of foolishness on his officers
SPIRIT OF PRIDE AND ARROGANCE
Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. -Prov 16:18 CSB
As I read through the bible , from Saul to Uzzaiah , to Ahab. Pride and Arrogance has always been the beginning of their down fall . Arrogance, extreme arrogance is a spirit. Those in place of authority are very vulnerable to this.
And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and slings to cast stones. And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvelously helped, till he was strong.
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction…: -2 Chronicles 26:14-16
Uzaiah was marvelously helped as a king till the Spirit of Pride and Arrogance entered him. When the spirit of Pride and Arrogance entered Nebuchadnezzer , it triggered Spiritual Judgement against him
As he looked out across the city, he said, ‘Look at this great city of Babylon! By my own mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic splendor.’
“While these words were still in his mouth, a voice called down from heaven, ‘O King Nebuchadnezzar, this message is for you! You are no longer ruler of this kingdom. You will be driven from human society. You will live in the fields with the wild animals, and you will eat grass like a cow. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses.’ Daniel 4:28
The beginning of the destruction of Kings is the entrance of the spirit of pride and arrogance. Kings should guard against it .
But as the Ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she was filled with contempt for him. They brought the Ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the special tent David had prepared for it. And David sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD. When he had finished his sacrifices, David blessed the people in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. Then he gave to every Israelite man and woman in the crowd a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a cake of raisins. Then all the people returned to their homes. When David returned home to bless his own family, Michal, the daughter of Saul, came out to meet him. She said in disgust, “How distinguished the king of Israel looked today, shamelessly exposing himself to the servant girls like any vulgar person might do!” David retorted to Michal, “I was dancing before the LORD, who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the LORD, so I celebrate before the LORD. Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes! But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I am distinguished!” So Michal, the daughter of Saul, remained childless throughout her entire life. –2 Samuel 6
David protected his heart against this spirit and secured his throne.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Romans 1:28
Because they failed to acknowledge God, he gave them over to Reprobate spirit, they no longer know what is good or bad.
Have you seen a person in authority behaving very inappropriately and doesn’t even care if it was wrong or right, doesn’t even feel remorse for any wrong action, acting with a dead conscience? a Reprobate Spirit is at work.
SPIRIT OF DELUSION AND ERROR
Paul, speaking of those who reject God’s truth, states, “For this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie. – 2 Thessalonians 2:11,
The Dutchmen have a proverb: “When God intends to destroy a man, He first puts out his eyes.” Dr. William Hendriksen,
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, – Isaiah 6:8-11
At this stage the king’s ability to discern a lie is gone, his ability to discern good counsel from wrong one is removed, he is headed to destruction. When the king starts treating every good counsel as opposition to his leadership and value wrong counsel from sycophants, watch, the Spirit of Error and Delusion has stepped in.
DECEIVING SPIRIT ON THE LIPS OF HIS PROPHETS
And Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; and the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying, ‘I will entice him.’ And the Lord said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’ Now therefore behold, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; the Lord has declared disaster for you.” –1 Kings 22:19–23
Why will God do such a thing, why will he allow such evil? Ahab has allowed the spirit of Arrogance and Pride to lay hold of him, he advanced to the point where he became taken over by a reprobate spirit. Many times God sent prophets to warn him, to redirect him, but he gave no heed.
Then a council was called in Heaven over his case. Destruction was perfected against him. Deceiving Spirit was released on the lips of his prophets . The prophets led him into a battle where he was destroyed finally.
This is a very dangerous point to get to in the journey to destruction. The prophets are supposed to be the source of a King’s spiritual direction and positive guideance but when Heaven decides to allow deceiving Spirits overtake them . Then that King is doomed.
Note that it was easy for the Prophets to play this role, in Ahab’s case, because even the King fought against Prophets, he killed many of them for telling him the truth.
When a king begins to seek after Men who tell him what he wants to hear not an express message from God. When he celebrates and honor Sycophants instead of those who watch over him in truth, he is about to fall to a deceiving Spirit.
SPIRIT OF FOOLISHNESS ON HIS OFFICERS
“Where are your wise counselors, Pharaoh? Let them tell you what God plans, what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is going to do to Egypt. The officials of Zoan are fools, and the officials of Memphis are deluded… The Lord has sent a spirit of foolishness on them, so all their suggestions are wrong. They cause Egypt to stagger like a drunk in his vomit.” Isaiah 19:12-14 NLT
In the above text, these political and military leaders were so certain. They were very confident about their wisdom . The king has relied on their counsel for many years but when the Spirit of foolishness enters them, their wisdom, and their wise counsels becomes foolishness. Because the Lord is set to destroy the King, he doesn’t even understand the difference between wise counsel and a foolish one.
When the Lord is setout to destroy a king , he sends foolishness into his camp and the spirits moves the king to accept the foolish advice.
The journey begins with fanning into flames the Spirit of Pride and Arrogance , when it moves and takes over a king, the reprobate Spirit takes over, he begins to operate without conscience. Then the Spirit of Error steps in and leads him further into destruction, he begins to make fundamental errors , irredeemable errors . He runs to the prophets, the same prophets that he has desecrated in his reprobate state, they lead him further into destruction. Then wise men around him who could have saved him from destruction by their advice , receives the spirit of foolishness and leads him straight to destruction. This is the path of a King heading to destruction travels. It all begins with an Arrogant Spirit.

Thus says the high and exalted One
Who lives forever, whose name is Holy,
“I dwell on a high and holy place,
And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit
In order to revive the spirit of the lowly
And to revive the heart of the contrite.” (Isa. 57:15)
“To this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.” (Isa. 66:2)
To be contrite means to acknowledge our limitations and failures . Humility, is an acknowledgement of who we are in comparison to God. God is bigger than anything we can understand, better than the best we have experienced. In humility, we pursue Him for more of Himself.
When you read Isaiah 66:2 and read the life of David, you will understand why his throne was established for ever. 1 chronicles 17:16-127 exposes further in David’s prayer how he guarded his heart from the Spirit of Arrogance the trigger of destruction of Kings.
“Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: ‘Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that You have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in Your sight, O God, You have spoken about the future of the house of Your servant. You have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men, O Lord God.’” 1 Chronicles 17:16-17
David has just been told that by the Lord that his dynasty would endure forever , he sat before the Lord in amazement at this promise – it seems that he could hardly believe it. He never forgot where he had came from, the depths from which God raised him up: the youngest son of a man living in the hick town of Bethlehem, doing a menial job in tending sheep, spurned by his brothers, but having a simple faith in God. And God raised him up from there to be king over Israel. Yet even then, David did not see himself as being mighty or exalted or special – he calls himself God’s servant.
When you Start reflecting on how great and awesome God is, and how insignificant we are in comparison. When we begin to appreciate that all we are is only because of what God has done for us, we’ll develop the same attitude that David has that established his throne forever and protect ourselves from the Spirit of Arrogance.
Lord, it doesn’t matter what I may achieve in Life, it doesn’t matter where you may take me , please Lord, let my heart never be lifted up in Pride . Father, in all I have cause me to know that it all came from thee. Open my eyes to see, open my heart to understand.
Let me never speak any word that may tend to my own praise, unless the good of my neighbour requires it; and even then let me beware, lest, to heal another, I wound my own soul. Let my ears and my heart be ever shut to the praise that comes from men.
Give me a dread of applause, in whatsoever form, and from whatsoever tongue, it comes. Deliver my soul from this snare of hell;
Lord; you are the giver of every good and perfect gift, if at any time you please to work through me, Lord please take your glory . Teach me to discern what is my own from what is another’s, and to render unto you the things that are yours. Let me, as a pure crystal, transmit all the light you pour upon me; but never claim as my own what is your sole property.
