KEYS TO THE FINISH LINE- Speedwell Emeka Onyewuotu

No one begins any endeavor with a desire to quit. We wish to finish and finish well. However many times we have began very brilliant ventures and abandon it along the way. At the beginning of the year, we get so pumped up with ideas, with projects to executive, visions to pursue , many of them we drop , abandon and give up on as the year progress.

In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. John 4:31 -34

Sometime in  December 2012, I brought out my dairy to look at how the year went. There were many things I had penciled down, many projects, many ideas, some I started and abandoned, some I never even started before giving up on.

I said to God, “Dear God, the year has ended again and another one is about to begin , here I am with my idea book full of excitement about a new year, yet this book contains a lot of abandoned, uncompleted dreams.  You know that I have gone through this route before and I don’t want the coming year to go down the same way,God.   Why is the idea page of my dairy so full but the action and finished pages of the same diary are less full, help me understand where I am missing it ”

I started studying and digging into God’s word for guidance, determined to end the cycle, then I discovered four keys that made all the difference. Four keys to the finish line, these keys changed everything.

  1. DETERMINATION: Determine to finish.    Jesus talking to his disciples said “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work”.   For him, quitting was not an option. He must finish it. That’s a major key to getting to the finish line.

In 1968, a Tanzanian athlete, John Stephen Akhwari  fell and broke his leg, while representing his country in the marathon at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, but he finished his race. Everyone else was gone but he kept going. When the athlete was asked why he didn’t quit when he broke his leg. He said, because his country didn’t send him 5,000 miles to start the race but to finish it.

Beloved, You are not born to quit.  It doesn’t matter how many times you tried and failed, get up, fire on till you get to the finish line. Be determined to get to the finish line.

“Behold, a people rises like a lioness, And as a lion it lifts itself; It will not lie down until it devours the prey…..” – Numbers 23:24

“The torrent of Kishon swept them away, The ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength. – Judges 5:21

  1. FOCUS: Concentrate, keep your eyes on the ball.

“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Genesis 11: 6

The power of focus can never be over emphasized. Your eyes must be single, set your eyes on the mark, stay focused, get intoxicated by the dream, by the project, by the idea. Talking about Jesus in Hebrew 12:2, we were told “… for the joy that was set before him … he endured the cross, despised the shame …”  Whatever he was going through he never removed his eyes from the price.

Paul said in Philippians 3:14,  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

His eyes were set on the ball. No distractions.

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. – Matthew 6:22-23 King James Version (KJV)

Let your eyes be single, avoid distractions, stay focused.

Psalm 44:18 Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way,

  1. ACTION PLAN: Have an action plan broken down into mile stones

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ – Luke 14:28-30

It appears the bible can’t stop talking about finishing. Finishing is so important.  Seat down; have a plan, a plan broken down into mile stones and timelines; with your eyes on the finish line , your heart determined to succeed.

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” –  Proverbs 16:9:

  1. GRACE: Tap into the finishing grace.

In all we must realize that the race is not to the swift, the battle is not to the the strong. We need God’s grace to win; we need Heaven’s to get to the finish line,

The sons of Ephraim were archers equipped with bows, Yet they turned back in the day of battle. Psalm 78:9

They were armed, skilled but defeated because Grace was absent.  In the atmosphere of grace, the journey to the finish line becomes easier.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do … Philippians 2:3

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. – Philippians 1:6

The bible described Jesus in Hebrew 12:2 as the author and finisher.  Tapping into that finishing grace is a major key to the finish line.

Now, I charge you beloved; are there dreams you’ve had, projects you have started, but you’ve given up on the way, go back dust your idea dairy, reactivate your action plan and finish it.

Have you given up on your prayer life or your journey with God, go back pick it up from where you stopped and race to the finish line.

The crown is at the end, the glory is at the finish line. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, get up keep pushing until you win.

Dear Lord help me to get to the finish line and finish strong, am tired of abandoning projects, giving up on dreams, slacking when I should fire on , I ask for your grace to finish, decorate my life with laurels of finished projects .
