ANOTHER GENERATION AROSE. – Speedwell Emeka Onyewuotu

“And the Israelites served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel…

After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.
The Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight and served the images of Baal.

They abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them… This made the LORD burn with anger against Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole their possessions. He turned them over to their enemies all around, and they were no longer able to resist them. ..  And the people were in great distress”. Judges 2:7,8-15

One of the ways to learn is by your experience. However, the best way to learn, unarguably, is to learn from the experience of others.
In the matters of the spirit, it is better to learn from the experience of others than to go through the same experience especially when it’s a negative experience. That’s one of the reasons the bible was given to us. Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. – Psalm 119:105

We were told in verse 3 of Judges 2 ,the consequences of Israel’s inability to completely obey God’s instruction.

And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. Judges 2;2-3

They will be thorns in your sides,[a] and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.” King James translations puts it this way

“THEY WILL BE A TORN ON YOUR FLESH AND THEIR GODS WILL BE A SNARE TO YOU

But because that generation understood how Heaven function, they were able to prevent any calamity in their days.

4 When the angel of the LORD finished speaking to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. 5 So they called the place Bokim (which means “weeping”), and they offered sacrifices there to the LORD. Judges 2:4

Look at verse 7,

7 And the Israelites served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.

We never read of any calamity until another generation arose. Another generation that knew not the Lord nor how he functions, nor the place of God in their nation’s life, nor the mistakes their fathers made, nor the wonders God did in the days of their father, nor the covenant he had with them and they caused Israel to sin.

They went after other gods, that God warned their fathers will be a snare to them. They ignorantly fell into the snare because they were not informed. They were not taught, they were not guided, they were not mentored, and they were not tutored in the ways of the Lord.

The calamity that befell Isreal those days and indeed the challenges many nations are facing today is the failure of the fathers to mentor their children, it was failure of the previous generation to show them the right way.

Train up a Child in the way he should go – Proverbs 22:6 KJV Point your kids in the right direction… Proverbs 22:6  (MSG)

For you to know the way a Child should go , for you to know the right direction , you must have had a knowledge , an experience of what going the opposite direction will result.

Let me pause and ask , What are we teaching our children? what experience good or bad have we been able to communicate to them as a guide? Have we not destroyed even the study of history in our schools? Have we not abandoned our roles as teachers, as mentors’, as guidians, to the Internet and Stars on television?

The bible admonished us to train, guide, tutor, mentor, a child in the way he should go. Children should not be abandoned to find their routes in life  without a guide, without a mentor, without a direction.

David puts it this way in Psams 44:1-4

1.We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Take a look at Psalm 78:3-16

3 ….which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: 6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: 8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. 10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; 11 And forgot his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

12 Marvelous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. 14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. 15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. 16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. -Psalm 78:3-16

Beloved, how many times have you called your young adults to tell them your story, story that highlights your strength, your weaknesses , your mistakes and even the grace of God and his mercies towards you? How many times have we taken them down memory lane of our walk with God and the lessons we have learnt? Have we not abandoned them to themselves, have we not given them over to the snares of this present world?

O Lord my God, the cry of my heart is for grace, grace to train the next generation in your ways. O Lord, give me the grace, to teach them, to show them your faithfulness and thy wonderful works in my life, grace to guide them, grace to mentor them, to talk to them about my errors and it’s consequences, to teach them about my strength and guide them in the right path. That they be not like their father in places I failed. That they may learn from me and excel more than I did in places I excelled. That they may learn to work with you even deeper and even more deeper than I ever did O Lord of my salvation.
